Sixteen years after opening its doors, the Durban-based hub continues to shape KwaZulu-Natal’s economy, tourism sector and global connectivity.

Marking its anniversary on 1 May 2026, the airport stands as South Africa’s third busiest, behind OR Tambo International and Cape Town International. It serves as the province’s primary international gateway, connecting more than 12 million people to domestic and global markets.

Growth has not been linear. Like much of the aviation industry, the airport faced a sharp downturn during the COVID-19 pandemic. Passenger numbers fell dramatically from 6.1 million in the 2019/20 financial year to just 1.5 million in 2020/21. Aircraft movements dropped in tandem.

Recovery, however, has been steady and sustained. By 2025/26, passenger volumes climbed to 5.6 million, representing a 92% return to pre-pandemic levels. Aircraft traffic has followed a similar trajectory, reaching nearly 89% of its previous baseline.

This rebound signals more than cyclical recovery. It reflects a structural shift in how KwaZulu-Natal connects to the world. Expanded routes and strengthened partnerships, driven in part by Durban Direct and the provincial route development committee, are improving accessibility and stabilising the regional aviation market.

The economic impact is visible on the ground. During the most recent festive season, the province welcomed over 1.2 million visitors, a 19% increase year-on-year. Tourism contributed R9.6 billion to GDP and supported more than 14,000 jobs.

International travel is also gaining traction. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, nearly 194,000 international visitors arrived in KwaZulu-Natal, injecting R1.5 billion into the local economy. Domestic travel added a further R6.1 billion.

Infrastructure investment is central to the airport’s next phase. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has committed to a R21.7 billion programme that includes facility upgrades, new developments, and compliance-driven projects. The aim is to enhance passenger experience while supporting long-term demand.

Beyond its economic footprint, the airport is also investing in surrounding communities. Initiatives range from agricultural training in Verulam to early childhood development programmes in Ndwedwe, reinforcing its role in regional development.

Global recognition continues to follow. In the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards, King Shaka International ranked among the top airports in Africa, while also securing a place in the global top ten for airports handling between 5 and 10 million passengers. It also received the 2025 ASQ Award for Most Enjoyable Airport in Africa.

Looking ahead, the focus is clear. Align capacity with demand. Strengthen connectivity. Maintain operational excellence. And ensure that growth translates into tangible economic value for the province.
