Fleet expansion, a mega-airport under way, 60 million passengers in sight – the state-owned carrier stands out as one of the few public-sector success stories in African aviation.

A standalone success story in African aviation, Ethiopian Airlines carried 19 million passengers in 2025, handled more than 784,000 tonnes of cargo and generated $7.6bn in revenue. Though it is wholly state-owned, chief executive Mesfin Tasew, appointed in 2022, emphasised that Ethiopian Airlines operates “as a commercial entity”.
