Ethiopian Airlines has marked 80 years of continuous operations, underscoring a trajectory that has seen the carrier evolve from a single post-war route into Africa’s largest aviation group, and a central player in the continent’s cargo and connectivity landscape.
The milestone traces back to the airline’s inaugural flight in 1946, when a Douglas C-47 connected Addis Ababa to Cairo. Eight decades on, Ethiopian Airlines operates a network spanning more than 140 destinations across five continents, supported by a fleet of over 140 aircraft.

As part of its anniversary activities, Ethiopian Airlines highlighted Nigeria as one of its most significant long-term markets, reflecting a broader strategy centred on intra-African connectivity.
Speaking during celebrations in Lagos, Firiehiwot Mekonnen, General Manager Nigeria at Ethiopian Airlines, described the country as “not just a destination but a valued partner”, noting that operations began in 1960, shortly after Nigeria’s independence.
