For many South African travellers, the Middle East has long been a key gateway to the rest of the world. Whether it is a stopover in Doha or a connection through Dubai, these routes are part of the rhythm of international travel.

Right now, that rhythm has shifted.

According to eTNW, airlines operating between South Africa and major Middle Eastern hubs have begun adjusting their schedules as ongoing military activity in the region continues to affect airspace and operations. The result is a more cautious, limited approach to flights, with flexibility becoming the name of the game for passengers.

    What’s changing for travellers

Several major carriers have issued updates, all pointing in the same direction. Fewer flights, tighter availability, and policies designed to help passengers adapt.

Emirates has confirmed that it is running a reduced schedule to South Africa for mid to late March, with the possibility of further changes depending on conditions. Travellers booked up to mid-April have been given options to rebook or reroute without additional charges, provided the new travel takes place within the same region and timeframe.

Qatar Airways is also operating a limited schedule, with selected departures from Johannesburg via Doha on specific dates. These flights connect to a wide range of destinations across Europe, Asia, and North America, although availability remains tight and subject to change.

Turkish Airlines has taken a broader approach, allowing passengers travelling across several Middle Eastern destinations to rebook or reroute their journeys or request refunds without penalties. This flexibility applies to travel scheduled up to the end of April, with options extending into June.

    SAA adjusts its codeshare plans

Closer to home, South African Airways has confirmed the suspension of certain codeshare flights operated by Emirates between Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Dubai.

Passengers affected by these changes can either move their bookings to the next available codeshare flight or opt for a refund or travel credit, depending on their preference. The credit option remains valid for an extended period, giving travellers more time to reconsider their plans.

A fluid situation with real impact

The situation remains dynamic, with airlines emphasising that schedules could change again as conditions evolve. For travellers, this means keeping a close eye on updates and staying flexible.

While disruptions are never ideal, the response from airlines shows a clear effort to ease the pressure. Rebooking options, refunds, and extended travel windows are all designed to reduce uncertainty during an unpredictable time.

    What it means going forward

For South Africans planning trips through the Middle East, the message is simple. Expect fewer flights, plan ahead, and keep options open.

It is a reminder of how quickly global events can ripple through travel plans, even thousands of kilometres away. Yet it also highlights how airlines are adapting in real time, working to keep people moving, even if the journey looks a little different than usual.
