The agreement will extend passenger connections beyond existing routes between the two countries, linking more destinations across Africa and China.
Ethiopian Airlines has signed a codeshare agreement with China Southern Airlines, expanding its commercial partnership with one of China’s major carriers as the two airlines seek to strengthen passenger connectivity between Africa and Asia.
The agreement will allow the carriers to market flights under shared airline codes, providing passengers with additional travel options across their respective networks.
Ethiopian Airlines said the partnership would improve access to destinations across Africa and China while strengthening existing direct air services between the two countries.
The arrangement is also expected to extend travel options beyond the airlines’ existing routes, allowing passengers to connect to additional destinations through their respective networks.
Under a typical codeshare arrangement, one airline can sell seats on flights operated by its partner using its own flight number. Such agreements allow carriers to expand their marketed networks without operating additional aircraft on every route.

The partnership comes as Ethiopian Airlines continues to develop Addis Ababa as a connecting hub for passenger traffic between Africa and international markets.
China is an established market within Ethiopian Airlines’ Asian network, with the carrier operating passenger services to several Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu.
China Southern Airlines, meanwhile, operates an extensive domestic network in China alongside international services, providing potential onward connections for passengers travelling from Africa.
The agreement could enable Ethiopian Airlines to offer customers access to additional Chinese destinations through China Southern’s domestic network, while the Chinese carrier could extend its marketed reach into African destinations served by Ethiopian Airlines.
The partnership also adds to the commercial aviation links between China and Africa, where airlines provide passenger connections for business travel, tourism and other international movements.
Ethiopian Airlines has pursued international partnerships alongside fleet expansion and the development of its passenger and cargo operations. Codeshare arrangements form part of that strategy by allowing the carrier to extend its commercial network through services operated by partner airlines.

The airline did not disclose the specific routes covered by the new agreement, its implementation date or whether the arrangement would include coordinated schedules, baggage transfers or frequent-flyer benefits.
Further details on the destinations available under the partnership are expected to determine the extent of the additional connections offered to passengers travelling between the two regions.
