The codeshare agreement covers cooperation on services between China and Ethiopia and onward connections within their regional networks.

Codesharing allows an airline to sell seats on flights operated by a partner under its own flight code. This expands the routes available to passengers without requiring the airline to operate every service itself.

The agreement also gives the carriers a way to cooperate beyond a route where their businesses overlap. Ethiopian already flies between Addis Ababa and Guangzhou, while China Southern has introduced a service linking the cities through Changsha.

According to Ethiopia’s Fana Media Corporation, which reported the agreement on 14 October, the partnership is intended to broaden travel options and support transfers across the airlines’ networks. Xinhua separately attributed the announcement to a statement issued by Ethiopian that day.

The announcement did not specify every route covered, when codeshare bookings would begin or whether baggage and other passenger benefits would apply uniformly across participating services.

A new Chinese route into Ethiopia

China Southern’s entry provides the immediate commercial backdrop to the agreement.

The airline began its Guangzhou–Changsha–Addis Ababa service on 12 October, according to Hunan’s provincial government. It operates twice weekly, on Mondays and Fridays, using a Boeing 787 aircraft.

The route adds a Chinese-operated service to Ethiopia and gives Changsha a second direct passenger connection to Africa, alongside its existing Nairobi service.

Hunan’s government said passengers arriving in Addis Ababa could connect to African destinations including Harare, Lusaka and Cairo. However, those onward connections should not automatically be treated as confirmed codeshare routes until the airlines publish the participating services.

    Cooperation alongside competition

The partnership gives Ethiopian another route to attract Chinese passengers to its African network. China Southern can also offer connections beyond Addis Ababa without operating its own aircraft on every onward route.

That makes the agreement commercially broader than the launch of a single flight. Its value will depend on which connections become bookable, how schedules align and the terms offered to passengers.

The new service had been announced before this week. Guangzhou’s government reported in August that China Southern planned to begin Ethiopian flights on 12 October, noting that Ethiopian already operated nonstop Guangzhou–Addis Ababa services.

The fresh development is therefore the codeshare disclosed on 14 October, rather than the original route announcement.

    Ethiopian expands its African connections

The partnership comes as Ethiopian prepares further additions to its own network.

The airline announced in September that it would begin four weekly passenger services to Port Harcourt, Nigeria, on 1 December, followed by the resumption of daily Durban, South Africa, flights on 11 December.

Those services would broaden the connections available through Addis Ababa. Neither announcement, however, establishes that the new Nigerian or South African flights will be included in the China Southern codeshare.

The range of eligible journeys will determine the practical benefits for travellers. While the announcement confirms the airlines’ plans to cooperate, published schedules and booking conditions will reveal how much additional choice the partnership offers passengers.
