Cost is a major issue. Worldwide, aviation is a high fixed-cost industry. Aircraft financing, maintenance, fuel and staffing all create significant operational expenses.
However, in Africa, taxes are also hiking up ticket prices. Many fares include charges that have little or nothing to do with aviation, because some governments see aviation as a convenient source of revenue, adding additional charges that are ultimately passed on to the passenger. The reality is that high prices discourage travel which in turn impacts economic growth.
