Ethiopia is advancing a major step in reshaping Africa’s aviation landscape through the development of Bishoftu International Airport (BIA), a flagship greenfield project designed as a continental hub that will serve both Ethiopia and the wider African region. The new airport, located around 40 kilometres southwest of Addis Ababa, is intended to ease growing capacity pressures caused by strong traffic at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) and to strengthen Ethiopia’s position within regional and global aviation.

The project will follow a phased development model, allowing infrastructure to expand in line with demand and operational needs. The first phase, valued at about USD 12.5 billion, is scheduled for completion by 2030 and will accommodate up to 60 million passengers each year. Once fully developed, the airport will have the capacity to handle 110 million passengers annually, which will make it the largest airport in Africa and a major driver of trade, tourism and regional investment.

“Bishoftu International Airport marks a historic leap in Africa’s aviation journey, significantly enhancing trade, tourism, and business across the continent and beyond,” said Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. He added, “With its cutting-edge technology, sustainable design, and unparalleled connectivity, the new airport positions Ethiopia to become the aviation capital of Africa, serving as a major gateway connecting the continent to the world. I urge financers around the globe to join us in supporting this ambitious project and to take part in this momentous milestone.”

Ethiopian Airlines Group, the project sponsor, is leading the initiative with support from the African Development Bank as the Initial Mandated Lead Arranger. Dar Al Handasah Consultants and KPMG are serving as the technical and financial advisors, while Clyde & Co are providing legal advice. Progress continues to accelerate. The release of the Project Information Memorandum, Financial Model and related documents to prospective lenders has marked a significant step towards financial close. Prequalification of EPC contractors is also underway, with bid submissions expected by mid December 2025, signalling the project’s transition from planning to procurement and implementation.

The project will be showcased at the Africa Investment Forum Market Days in Rabat, Morocco, from 26 to 28 November 2025, where it is expected to attract wide interest from financiers and investors. With its scale and strategic vision, Bishoftu International Airport stands as a defining national project and a symbol of Africa’s growing ambition in aviation and infrastructure.
