Ethiopia Today (Addis Ababa) September 7, 2026: Kinshasa rapidly positions itself as Central Africa’s primary air transit gateway, driven by a series of high-stakes investments from Ethiopian Airlines and the arrival of premier international carriers.

By anchoring intercontinental transit routes, including flights to South America, and launching the joint-venture carrier Air Congo, Ethiopian Airlines has fundamentally reshaped the DRC’s connectivity.

Paired with direct routes from global giants like Qatar Airways and a multi-million-dollar overhaul of N’djili International Airport, the Congolese capital is actively dismantling years of regional isolation to compete directly with Africa’s established aviation centers.

The capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is rapidly transforming into a major Central African aviation gateway, fueled by strategic investments from Ethiopian Airlines and the entry of new global carriers.

In addition to serving Kinshasa as a primary destination, Ethiopian Airlines utilizes the city as a strategic technical stopover for its intercontinental routes to South America, including São Paulo, thereby unlocking crucial transit capacity and international connectivity for the region.

A cornerstone of this expansion is “Air Congo,” a joint-venture national carrier launched in December 2024 through a strategic partnership between Ethiopian Airlines and the DRC government, which has significantly reinforced domestic air networks. Concurrently, major Middle Eastern carriers such as Qatar Airways have introduced direct routes to Kinshasa, seamlessly linking Central Africa to key commercial markets across Asia and North America.

To keep pace with surging passenger traffic, the Congolese government is undertaking comprehensive modernizations at N’djili International Airport alongside constructing a 22-kilometer rail link to the city center.

Despite project execution delays and stiff competition from established continental hubs in Addis Ababa, Nairobi, and Johannesburg, market analyses confirm that Kinshasa is steadily overcoming its historical isolation to secure its position as a competitive, go-to aviation hub for Central Africa.

With three daily frequencies now operating between the capitals, Ethiopian Airlines has increased its service to 21 weekly flights to address strong business travel demand. Deployed on modern Boeing aircraft, the expanded route strengthens regional connectivity, a move UN Tourism officials praised as essential for boosting local economic growth.
