Lufthansa Group has unveiled its most extensive network expansion since the COVID-19 pandemic, announcing ten new intercontinental connections alongside additional European destinations and frequency increases across its airline portfolio for the Summer 2027 season.

The expanded schedule, which opened for booking on October 20, covers Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Discover Airlines and Edelweiss, with the group strengthening connectivity across Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe.

For Africa, the expansion will bring additional capacity to Egypt, Tanzania, Namibia and South Africa, reflecting the group’s continued investment in both business and leisure markets on the continent.

Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa Group’s principal Africa-focused network carrier, will introduce five weekly flights between Brussels and Cairo in Summer 2027, adding the Egyptian capital to its network.

The airline will also increase services to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to three weekly flights, building on the destination’s introduction in Summer 2026.

The additional capacity reinforces Brussels Airlines’ position within the group as a key operator connecting African markets with Europe through its Brussels hub.

Meanwhile, Discover Airlines will expand its operations between Munich and Windhoek, Namibia, increasing services to five weekly flights with the addition of two frequencies.

The increase is supported by the deployment of a third Airbus A330-300 at Discover’s Munich base, enabling the leisure carrier to expand its long-haul network.

Swiss leisure airline Edelweiss will also strengthen its African operations, bringing forward the start of its seasonal Windhoek services to March 16 and increasing frequencies to three weekly flights from July.

Edelweiss will additionally expand its combined Kilimanjaro–Zanzibar service to four weekly frequencies, increasing capacity to two of Tanzania’s most important international tourism gateways.

Lufthansa itself will increase frequencies between Frankfurt and Cape Town, although the group has not specified the revised weekly schedule.

The African expansion comes alongside a substantial strengthening of Lufthansa Group’s long-haul network elsewhere.

From Frankfurt, Lufthansa will launch three weekly nonstop flights to Columbus, Ohio, beginning May 5, 2027, using Boeing 787-9 aircraft equipped with the airline’s new Allegris cabin.

The airline will also introduce daily Frankfurt–Tokyo Narita services from March 28, complementing its existing Tokyo Haneda operations, and restore seasonal flights to Nagoya three times weekly from March 29.

From Munich, Lufthansa will inaugurate a new service to Phoenix, Arizona, on August 3, operating three times weekly with Airbus A350-900 aircraft.

Other long-haul frequency increases include services to destinations in India, Brazil, Canada, Singapore and the United States.

Discover Airlines will also introduce its first nonstop flights between Frankfurt and Edmonton, Canada, beginning June 1, operating three times weekly.

Within the wider group, ITA Airways will launch Rome Fiumicino–Caracas flights on March 30, 2027, with three weekly Airbus A330-900 services, while SWISS will retain its newly introduced Bengaluru connection and expand Tokyo Narita frequencies.

Austrian Airlines will extend its seasonal Mauritius operation until April 22, nearly a month beyond the winter schedule, while maintaining an extensive long-haul network across Asia and North America.

Stefan Kreuzpaintner, Lufthansa Group’s Senior Vice President Commercial Customer Offer, described the programme as the group’s largest route expansion across its six hubs in years, aimed at providing passengers with more travel options and stronger connectivity.

Africa’s growing importance in the group’s network

Although the Americas and Asia account for much of the new intercontinental flying, the African additions highlight Lufthansa Group’s increasingly differentiated approach to the continent.

Rather than concentrating all African expansion within a single airline, the group is deploying capacity through several carriers serving distinct markets.

Brussels Airlines continues to develop its scheduled African network through Brussels, while Discover Airlines and Edelweiss are expanding leisure-oriented services to destinations including Windhoek, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar.

Lufthansa’s additional Cape Town frequencies further strengthen the group’s presence in South Africa’s long-haul market.

The strategy allows Lufthansa Group to address different sources of demand, from business and connecting traffic to European holidaymakers travelling to African tourism destinations.

It also demonstrates the growing role of specialised leisure airlines in supporting international connectivity to African markets.

For Namibia and Tanzania in particular, the additional frequencies will increase direct access from European markets, potentially supporting tourism flows and providing travellers with more scheduling options.

The expansion nevertheless comes against an increasingly competitive backdrop, with European, Middle Eastern and African airlines competing for traffic between Africa and international markets.

For Lufthansa Group, the Summer 2027 programme represents a significant commitment of additional capacity across its network, with Africa remaining an important component of a wider strategy to strengthen connectivity through its European hubs.
