According to the latest Skytrax report, Cape Town International Airport has officially snagged the title of the continent’s best airport.
The African Travel and Tourism Association also pointed out that the African aviation industry is growing at a record-breaking pace.
OAG data shows a staggering 182.4 million seats scheduled between January and October 2026.

Of those, 129.5 million are on international routes, which is an 18.6% jump compared to last year.
From major hubs like Johannesburg and Casablanca to rising stars in Kigali, Mauritius and Antananarivo, the continent is pouring investment into modern terminals and better flight links.
For passengers, this means quicker check-ins, top-tier lounges and a smoother journey overall. 2026 is officially a turning point for African travel.
The top 10 airports in Africa
1. Cape Town International Airport (South Africa)
Taking the top spot in 2026, Cape Town is the go-to for tourists and VIPs alike. This award-winning hub meets global standards and consistently proves its worth in the Skytrax rankings.
2. O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg (South Africa)
Joburg’s O.R. Tambo remains the powerhouse of the continent. As the busiest and most connected hub, it serves as the primary gateway to Africa’s biggest economy, managing millions of travellers with a focus on scale.

3. Marrakech Menara Airport (Morocco)
Continuously making the top 10, Marrakech Menara sees massive foot traffic, having handled more than 9.3 million passengers in 2025.
4. King Shaka International Airport, Durban (South Africa)
Durban’s King Shaka is a fan favourite for its simple, user-friendly layout. It is the “stress-free” option, offering short walking distances and less of the usual big-city congestion.
5. Mohammed V International Airport, Casablanca (Morocco)
As Morocco’s largest airport, Mohammed V is a critical bridge connecting Africa to Europe and the Middle East.
6. Cairo International Airport (Egypt)
Located 22km from the heart of Cairo, CAI is Egypt’s busiest hub. It moves over 22 million passengers a year across four terminals, offering a vast network of domestic and international flights alongside modern security and lounges.
7. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (Mauritius)
The home of Air Mauritius, this airport features a modern, eco-friendly terminal designed to resemble a traveller’s palm. It efficiently handles over 4 million passengers annually.

One of the continent’s heavy hitters, Bole handles over 22 million international and 2 million domestic passengers every year. With two terminals, it is a world-class link between Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Madagascar’s primary gateway has seen recent upgrades to improve comfort and operations. It connects the island to Africa, Europe and Asia, playing a vital role in the country’s tourism.
