For many South Africans planning trips abroad, the usual travel map has been redrawn almost overnight. Routes that once felt predictable now come with uncertainty, and travellers are adjusting quickly.

One airline, however, seems to be stepping confidently into that gap.

According to eTNW, Ethiopian Airlines is seeing a sharp rise in bookings from South Africa, with more travellers choosing its connections to Europe, the United States, and parts of Asia. It is not a sudden fluke, but rather the result of changing travel patterns and an airline that has quietly built a strong network over time.

A surge driven by shifting routes

Recent booking trends show just how quickly things have changed. Travel agencies in South Africa have reported a significant jump in demand for Ethiopian Airlines, with some seeing bookings more than double since early March.

The shift comes as disruptions affecting Middle Eastern air routes have reduced capacity, forcing travellers to look for alternatives.

African carriers have stepped in to fill that space. With European airlines already operating near capacity, more passengers are now turning to airlines within the continent to reach international destinations.

    Why Ethiopian is standing out

Among African carriers, Ethiopian Airlines has emerged as one of the strongest options.

Its extensive network, connecting through Addis Ababa, allows travellers to reach a wide range of destinations without relying on traditional Middle Eastern hubs. That flexibility has become increasingly valuable in the current travel climate.

At the same time, pricing plays a role. Ethiopian often offers more affordable fares compared to some competitors, making it an attractive option for cost-conscious travellers navigating rising flight prices.

    Not without its challenges

While demand is growing, not every traveller is fully convinced.

Some travel professionals have pointed out challenges with response times and customer support, particularly when urgent assistance is needed. For certain clients, that remains a deciding factor when choosing an airline.

It is a reminder that while price and availability matter, service still plays a key role in the overall travel experience.

A trend that started before the disruption

What makes this story more interesting is that Ethiopian Airlines’ growth in South Africa did not begin with the recent changes.

Data shows that the airline has been steadily increasing its share of South African international traffic over time. The current surge has simply accelerated a trend that was already underway.

A strong presence across key routes

Ethiopian Airlines has built a notable footprint across multiple regions.

It has become the leading carrier for South Africans travelling to India, transporting tens of thousands of passengers on routes connecting Johannesburg and Mumbai via Addis Ababa.

In the Middle East, it has maintained consistent operations to destinations such as Tel Aviv and key Saudi Arabian cities, even during periods when other airlines scaled back services. Passenger numbers on these routes have grown significantly in recent years.

Its European network continues to expand, with strong demand for destinations including Brussels, Rome, Athens, Vienna, and Milan.

The airline has also established itself as a major indirect carrier between South Africa and the United Kingdom, serving tens of thousands of passengers across routes to London and Manchester.

And while direct flights still dominate travel between South Africa and the United States, Ethiopian remains one of the leading connecting options in that market.

    What this means for travellers

For South Africans, the shift offers both opportunity and adjustment.

More travellers are becoming open to alternative routes, longer layovers, and different airlines in exchange for availability and value. It is a change in mindset as much as it is a change in logistics.

For the aviation industry, it signals a broader shift in how global travel flows through Africa.

A quiet rise, now in full view

Ethiopian Airlines has not made headlines in the same way as some global carriers, but its steady growth is becoming harder to ignore.

What was once seen as an alternative is now, for many travellers, a first choice.

And as travel patterns continue to evolve, that quiet rise may turn into something much more prominent in the years ahead.
