Ethiopian Airlines doubles down on South Africa with more flights and upgrades

South African travellers could soon find it a lot easier and a lot more comfortable to connect to the rest of the world.

Ethiopian Airlines is quietly stepping up its game locally, rolling out more flights, better aircraft, and smarter booking systems as it looks to deepen its footprint in the country.

More flights between Cape Town and Addis Ababa

According to travelnews, at the end of March, the airline made a notable move: doubling its daily service between Cape Town and Addis Ababa.

That means two afternoon flights every day, giving travellers more flexibility when planning trips, whether it’s for business, family visits, or long-haul connections into Europe, Asia, or the rest of Africa.

For many in Cape Town, this is a welcome shift. Direct and frequent connections to a major African hub have historically been limited, often forcing travellers to route through Johannesburg or even overseas hubs.

A bigger plan beyond Cape Town

While Cape Town is the immediate focus, Ethiopian Airlines isn’t stopping there. The airline has signalled plans to expand to additional South African destinations, hinting at a broader strategy to tap into the country’s growing travel demand.

It’s a move that reflects a bigger trend: African carriers are increasingly positioning themselves as global connectors, rather than relying on traditional European or Middle Eastern transit hubs.

    Upgraded aircraft, better onboard experience

Alongside more flights, Ethiopian is also working on upgrading the aircraft used on its South African routes.

For passengers, that could mean improved comfort, better in-flight amenities, and more efficient operations—small details that make a big difference, especially on long-haul journeys.

In a market where travellers are becoming more selective about value for money, these upgrades are likely to matter just as much as pricing.

A shift in how flights are sold

Behind the scenes, there’s another change that could reshape how South Africans book flights.

Ethiopian is expanding its use of New Distribution Capability (NDC), a newer system that allows airlines to offer richer, more personalised content directly to travel agents and customers.

Unlike traditional booking systems, NDC can unlock fares, bundles, and options that aren’t always visible on standard global distribution systems. The airline is already working with local partners to roll this out more widely across South Africa.

    What travellers are saying

On social media, frequent flyers have welcomed the added Cape Town frequencies, especially those tired of long layovers or indirect routes. Some travel agents have also pointed out that increased competition on key routes could eventually benefit pricing—though that remains to be seen.

    Why this matters now

For years, South African travellers have relied heavily on a handful of international carriers to connect globally. Ethiopian Airlines’ expansion signals a shift—one where African airlines play a bigger role in linking the continent to the world.

And for everyday travellers, it’s simple:
more flights, more options, and potentially a smoother journey from take-off to touchdown.
