Xiamen Airlines is set to launch its inaugural service to Africa by establishing a direct route between Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport and Addis Ababa Bole International Airport on November 28, 2026. The seasonal service will operate weekly using Boeing 787-8 aircraft through February 28, 2027, introducing the first nonstop air bridge between the two commercial aviation hubs.

The strategic entry of the SkyTeam alliance carrier expands Addis Ababa’s position as the primary aviation gateway connecting mainland China with the African continent. With this addition, the Ethiopian capital secures direct passenger and cargo connections across six major Chinese metropolitan centers. Ethiopian Airlines currently operates scheduled services to Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Shanghai, while China Southern Airlines is scheduled to commence twice-weekly operations connecting Guangzhou to Addis Ababa via Changsha in October 2026.

Market intelligence data reveals that direct Origin and Destination (O&D) passenger traffic between Xiamen and Addis Ababa totaled roughly 267 passengers in 2025. However, broader demand between Xiamen and various destinations across Africa reached approximately 24,300 passengers over the same period, led by high-volume transit routes to Luanda at 4,700 passengers, Cairo at 4,400 passengers, and Johannesburg at 3,300 passengers. With Addis Ababa representing just 1.1 percent of total Xiamen-Africa O&D traffic, Xiamen Airlines’ operational strategy relies on leveraging Bole International Airport’s extensive inter-line hub infrastructure to aggregate connecting passengers from across its domestic network and feed them into onward African destinations.

The capital city remains the continent’s largest hub for China-Africa aviation capacity, having generated approximately 85,900 passengers between Chinese destinations and Addis Ababa in 2025, alongside a total market volume of 102,300 passengers between the two nations. The new route comes as Xiamen Airlines expands its international footprint, boosting seat capacity by 7.6 percent year-over-year during the summer 2026 schedule to reach 3.86 million seats before scaling winter 2026–2027 international capacity by an additional 9.2 percent to roughly 3 million seats worldwide.
